What is PAX?

Here’s the brief history from their website:

In 2004, the folks at Penny Arcade decided they wanted a show exclusively for gaming. Sure, comics, anime, and other nerd hobbies were cool, and those activities all had their own shows… so what about games? From that idea spawned a small 4,500 person event in Bellevue, Washington, focused on the culture and community that is gaming.

Since then, the show hasn’t looked back. Doubling in size each year until venue capacities were reached, in 2010 the show expanded into Boston for PAX East, drawing tens of thousands of attendees in the inaugural year. The shows in Seattle and Boston represent the two largest gaming events in North America!

Red Carpet Events LA held its Annual Grammy Awards Style Lounge on Friday Feb 8th, 2013 in Beverly Hills at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. In honor of the  55th Annual Grammy Awards, this Hot Luxury Gift Style Lounge for Nominees and Presenters featured a variety of Fashionable and Trend- Setting Gifts. Epic-Scents was invited to participate in this very exclusive event.

Celebrities were excited to see – and smell – their classic favorites and to try try out new Scent Blasters.  They really liked the fresh spicy fragrance of the Proto Man®  and Mega Man®’s clean, fresh, masculine fragrance.

Keith Austin wins PlayStation®Vita

Keith Austin is a HUGE fan of comics, anime, and gaming, so he headed out on Saturday, October 13th to New York Comic Con. He’s been a fan of zombies and comic books since he was a small child, and visiting Comic Con was like going to Disneyland for a Mickey Mouse fan.

When they were passing the Epic-Scents booth, his girlfriend, Aracelly, encouraged him to stop and smell the new fragrances and buy one of the new Mega Man® air fresheners.

While he doesn’t own a car, he said “I’m a big Mega Man fan, but I purchased the Proto Man air freshener– it’s more like me. While we were there, the guy at the booth said I could enter the sweepstakes right now. I usually don’t win anything and when I saw that PlayStation®Vita, I thought I could never afford something like that.”

Keith thought, “I wouldn’t have time to play with that anyways,” dismissing his entry as another entry that didn’t pan out.

Then, he got the call. He had won the PlayStation®Vita.

Keith, a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guardsmen will definitely make time to play the newest games and enjoy his PlayStation®Vita!

I came to a frightening realization over the weekend. We are less than ten weeks away from Christmas day. The holidays, and as a result the holiday game rush, is about to come crashing down on us like a tidal wave.

The good news about recent years is that there have been real gems floating amidst the sea of games churned out to steal the money of unsuspecting shoppers. Last year Skyrim alone would have been enough to justify the holiday shopping season, but the 2011 holiday season was so crowded with amazing games that Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite retreated into 2012. Just think about that for a minute.

We’ve already been treated to some awesome games in the past month (Borderlands 2, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Dishonored, and Skylanders Giants) and the hits are going to keep on rolling.

Things are starting to get very crowded. Next week brings us Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. The week after that is Halo 4 (on Election Day no less). Call of Duty Black Ops II comes out the week after that. Talk about a killstreak (see what I did there?). PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale and LEGO Lord of the Rings are in the mix as well.

Those are some great games. No doubt about that. But, if you ask me, the real fun will begin on Sunday, November 18^th when Nintendo releases its long awaited WiiU along with the brand new (HD !!!!) Super Mario Brothers U. I’ve talked about the WiiU before, but as launch day gets closer my excitement level keeps on rising. I’m going to own this one folks. I am a HUGE Nintendo fanboi. I am about as rational about Nintendo and their products as Matthew Berry is for RG3 (Read: not one bit). I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when my completely irrational love for Nintendo started, but it was probably somewhere around the time I sprinted around my living room on Christmas day with my brother because we got a Super Nintendo. You don’t really recover from that sort of thing. Any other Nintendo fans in the house?

Well folks, another New York Comic Con is officially in the books. The Epic-Scents booth was a huge success and I know I speak for everyone at the office when I say thank you to everyone who stopped by. It was amazing to have an opportunity to meet so many of our fans AND to get a chance to earn a whole bunch of new ones at the same time! We had some prime real estate near the LEGO booth and directly across from a major retailer so we had major foot traffic for the whole event. All in all, it was pretty sweet!

Let’s get to the business at hand shall we?

Last week I promised a story of epic proportions. I told you that I would tell the tale of a wide-eyed country boy taking his first steps into the big city on a quest fraught with danger around every corner. I hate to disappoint, but I can only get halfway to my promise.

You see (and I’m sure everyone who lives inNew York Cityalready knows this) it wasn’t all that scary of a place. I mean… sure… I almost got totally creamed by a bus because I wandered into traffic staring up at the tallest freaking buildings I have ever seen. But, I was not tailed by any roving gangs of thugs. I didn’t stumble upon any masked criminals running away from a heist. My trip was also, unfortunately, devoid of even a single member of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery.

You know what I found instead of peril, danger, and all that other hooey? I found a long list of friendly faces that were more than willing to help make sure that this innocent traveler reached his destination. I’m sure that my wide-eyed, slack-jawed stare at the skyline as I passed through the city was a sign that I might need the help to avoid ending up on the wrong end of the city. Also, New York Comic Con was a thing and I was wearing a Legend of Zelda jacket so it is very possible that some of them knew instinctively where I was headed. It’s actually kind of funny that I spent most of my life being told that New Yorkers are rude, self-centered, and gruff only to find out first hand that they were totally willing to help a nerd find his way. It was an amazing experience (and one that I hope to repeat again).

Obviously, getting toNew   York Citywas only small part of the trip. It may have been important to me, but the real meat of my experience was at the convention itself. New York Comic Con is, to be blunt, freaking huge. I had the pleasure of being able to walk the show floor before the doors opened and while everyone was setting up their booths. Fortunately for me, a lot of the work had been done the day before so I was able to sneak a peak at a lot of the amazing trailers and game-play demos that were already looping when I got there. It was almost peaceful watching everyone put the finishing touches on their booths and start to lay out their products for display.

That changed very quickly when the gates opened for general admission at 3 pm. Thursday is supposed to be the “light” day, but when 30,000 tickets are sold it results in aLOTof people crowding in all at once.

Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on every game I wanted to before I had to leave to catch my train home. Here are some of my highlights:

Age of Wushu –  PC

If I had the authority to pick one, this would have been my game of the show. I could have played it for hours. It is one of the most beautiful games I have seen in a long time. In fact, I watched the game play trailer loop two or three times before the show started to try and catch all the small details.

Age of Wushu is a classic MMO that was developed inChinaand is being brought over to the west early next year. The easiest way to describe is to call it a crossover between World of Warcraft and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.  Players create characters that are members of different martial arts schools that that each grant different skills and abilities.

Each school is also its own faction within the game, but the interaction between the schools is where Age of Wushu sets itself apart from other games in the genre. The storyline of the game is largely player driven. Schools can form alliances and rivalries. They can build massive schools for themselves by pooling their resources, or they can work to destroy them. This kind of variation in the story of the game should result in every server having a different flavor. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this one turns out when it’s all done!

Okami HD – PSN

Yeah. Yeah. I know. This is a remake. But, seriously, this is a remake of a Playstation 2 classic that is only made better by the gorgeous HD presentation. I wasn’t impressed by the Move controls that were demoed, but I was hypnotized by the graphics to the point that I could have been controlling the game using live lobsters and I might not have noticed. It’s that good.

Playstation All-StarsBattleRoyale – PS3

Ok folks. I watched a lot of this game being played and got a few rounds in myself. I can definitively say that this game is 100%, unadulterated, unfiltered Super Smash Brothers clone. You know what else? I don’t really care. The game is a ton of fun.

I spent my time playing as Sly Cooper (I have always had a soft spot for the Thievious Racoonus) and had more fun than I ever thought I would when I first heard about it. The controls were intuitive. Even non-hardcore fighter fans will pick up the controls easily and be able to compete. It felt like accessibility was a big focus for the designers, but they were careful to include a lot of depth in strategy as well.

I don’t know if we’ll see this title at next year’s EVO tournament, but if you and your friends like to pile into the living room and virtually beat the snot out of each other then this will be a great option. It will be an even better option if you happen to have been shut out of Smash Brothers because you have some friends that refuse to play Nintendo games for some reason.

The WiiU

This was the most crowded booth I saw aside from the HALO 4 multi-player. I was able to sneak in for a little hands-on time though. The biggest thing that stood out for me was that the gamepad wasn’t as bulky and heavy as I expected it to be. It wasn’t ultra-light by any means, but I expected to feel a little more weight behind it than I did. This was great news for me.

There were a lot of other great games at the show that are worth mentioning as well like Devil May Cry and Tomb Raider.

The entire Comic Con experience was amazing. I can’t say enough how great it felt to be there and to have a chance to bask in all its geeky glory.  I can’t wait to go back next year (and maybe even get a chance to stay a little longer)!
